#12DaysOfHealth- Cranberry Sauce

A traditional holiday dish with a healthy spin!

 

Most dishes are packed with sugar so in this recipe we will replace sugar with honey. To veer off topic shortly though, is honey really better than sugar? Yes and no.

They both are still sugars. Your body breaks down food into glucose and uses it for fuel. The more complex a food (complex carbohydrate) the more work it is to break down. Pure cane sugar is made up of 50% glucose and 50% fructose, which can be broken down very easily thus leading to a surge in blood glucose. Honey, made mostly of sugar as well, but is only 30% glucose and less than 40% fructose. There are also about 20 other sugars in the mix, many of which are much more complex, and dextrin, a type of starchy fiber. This means that your body expends more energy to break it all down to glucose. Therefore, you end up accumulating fewer calories from it.

If you buy local or organic honey, they contain bee pollen, which will help reduce your allergies in the coming seasons (especially helps if its local honey). Honey also doesn’t contain any preservatives because it doesn’t break down in nature. Yay! No added chemicals into your body!

Cranberry Sauce

 

Ingredients

  • 12 oz bag of fresh cranberries (approx 3 ¼ cups)

  • ½ cup of honey

  • 1 medium cinnamon stick

  • Zest of an Orange

  • 1 cup of water

Directions:

  1. Dump everything into a pot and turn on the stove! Super tough I know, it’s ok you’ll get through this!

  2. Cook over medium - high heat for 30-45 minutes. When most of the liquid is cooked out, turn the heat down to a simmer. The longer you let it simmer, the thicker it gets. Don’t let ALL the liquid go out though or it will burn. Stir more frequently towards the end.

  3. All to cool, then serve and enjoy!
