How do we eat well without suffering?

Ya this is a hard one. I struggle with it still sometimes. I'll admit it, I was out to lunch today and I saw a big juicy burger and that just sounded amazing! Now normally I'd advise to take the bun off, eat the burger and order a salad instead of fries. Today I didn't, I ate most of the bun and ate half of the big arugula salad. Was that balanced? Ehhh, for the most part. But here is the confusing part; sometimes your body needs it! I know most of you are thinking, "well that's easy, my body 'needs' that cake right now." You probably need some type of sugar or carbohydrate that's found in that cake.

I normally "need" chocolate, cookies and the occasional chips/fries. But I've noticed with my body when I NEED chocolate (when it's not that time) I'm actually lacking in magnesium. Magnesium is found in dark green vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and what do you know DARK CHOCOLATE! Just because I said its high in magnesium or we've seen this picture to the right floating around the internet does not give you the ok to binge eat chocolate. Allow yourself to have a little bit, then bump up the other foods that are high in magnesium. Check out the link below for the list of foods highest in magnesium. 

So that was just one example of what your body could be lacking. My main point here is that you NEED to listen to your body, figure out what it really needs not what your taste buds want. Have self control but also don't cut yourself off completely. If you cut yourself off completely you'll start a binge diet and that's a hard one to dig yourself out of, trust me, I know first hand. Indulge in the simple joys, don't over do it.
